What should you know about anencephaly fetus?

The condition starts when the upper neural tube fails to close during early development. Some pregnancies end before birth; babies who are born alive receive comfort-focused care because surgery cannot recreate the missing structures or correct the underlying condition.

A fetus with anencephaly may continue to grow and may have a heartbeat and movements during pregnancy. Those signs do not change the severity of the missing brain and skull development. The amount of amniotic fluid can also change, so ongoing maternity care may include monitoring the pregnant person's wellbeing and planning how and where birth would occur if the pregnancy continues.

The diagnosis can bring grief while the pregnancy is still ongoing. Families may hold different values and make different choices; care should provide clear clinical information, respectful counselling and time to consider the options available under local practice.

Request confirmation from a fetal medicine specialist and ask whether other fetal differences were identified. Your team can discuss continuing or ending the pregnancy, anticipated maternity care, and what each path may involve physically and emotionally. If you continue, a written birth and comfort-care plan can record your wishes about holding the baby, symptom relief, keepsakes, spiritual care and family presence.

Genetic counselling may help review personal and family history and plan future pregnancies. Support can include a bereavement counsellor, mental-health professional, social worker, faith adviser or a trusted community member chosen by you.

Call your maternity unit urgently for heavy vaginal bleeding, strong or persistent abdominal pain, leaking fluid, fever, fainting, regular painful contractions earlier than expected, or a marked reduction in the fetus's established movement pattern. These signs require assessment because they may relate to the pregnant person's health or a pregnancy complication, independent of anencephaly. For emotional crisis or thoughts of self-harm, seek emergency help immediately and stay with a trusted person.

Ask what the ultrasound shows, how the diagnosis was confirmed, and what changes might occur as the pregnancy progresses. If continuing, discuss monitoring, birth planning, pain relief, newborn comfort care and memory-making. If considering ending the pregnancy, ask what methods are available, what physical recovery may involve, and where you can find confidential emotional support.
