What should you know about anencephaly cause?

The neural tube is an early structure that forms the brain and spinal cord. When its upper end stays open, major parts of the brain, skull and covering skin cannot develop. This process usually occurs before a person knows they are pregnant.

Anencephaly is generally considered multifactorial, meaning that inherited susceptibility can interact with nutrition, health conditions, medicines or environmental exposures. Low folate availability around conception is one recognised influence, but a diagnosis does not prove that folate intake was inadequate. Certain anti-seizure medicines, poorly controlled diabetes and high body temperature early in pregnancy may also influence neural tube development.

Even after careful review, a clinician may not find a single explanation. The condition is not caused by ordinary movement, intercourse, routine work or a distressing thought, and a parent should not interpret the diagnosis as personal fault.

After an affected pregnancy, arrange preconception care before trying again. A clinician can review your medical history, family history, medicines and supplements, then recommend an appropriate folic acid plan. Do not stop an anti-seizure or other prescribed medicine on your own; abrupt changes may be harmful, and safer planning often involves both the prescribing specialist and maternity team.

If you are currently pregnant, continue prescribed care and ask whether specialist ultrasound, genetic counselling or testing is appropriate. Testing may help when anencephaly appears alongside other structural differences, although it may not reveal why the neural tube failed to close.

Contact a clinician before conception if you previously had a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect, take medicine for seizures, or have diabetes, because supplement and medicine plans may need individual adjustment. During pregnancy, arrange prompt follow-up if screening or ultrasound raises concern about the fetal brain or skull. Seek urgent maternity assessment for bleeding, leaking fluid, severe pain, fever, fainting, or reduced fetal movement once a usual movement pattern is established.
