Anencephaly and encephalocele explained

Short answer
Anencephaly and encephalocele are serious but distinct neural tube defects that affect early development of the baby's skull and brain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The essential distinction
Anencephaly involves major absence of the skull and brain structures and is not compatible with long-term survival. Encephalocele is an opening in the skull through which membranes, brain tissue or both may protrude; its effects vary with the location, contents and associated findings.
How the diagnoses differ
Both conditions begin when structures forming the brain and spinal cord do not close and develop as expected very early in pregnancy. They are not different names for the same finding, and the outlook and care choices cannot be inferred from the shared category alone.
An ultrasound may raise or establish the diagnosis. Detailed imaging helps define anatomy and look for other differences. The fetal medicine team interprets the whole picture; with encephalocele, the amount and type of tissue involved are especially relevant to counselling and planning.
What happens after a suspected finding
Ask for referral to a fetal medicine specialist for a detailed scan and a clear explanation of what was seen. Additional imaging or genetic counselling may be offered when it could clarify the finding, identify related conditions or inform future pregnancy planning.
The team should discuss the expected course, uncertainty, options for the pregnancy, birth planning and comfort-focused or neonatal care where relevant. Families can request time, written information, an interpreter and emotional or bereavement support. The diagnosis is not caused by an ordinary action such as exercise, travel or a particular meal.
When urgent pregnancy care is needed
The fetal diagnosis itself needs timely specialist follow-up, but it does not determine whether a pregnant person has an immediate emergency. Seek urgent maternity assessment for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leaking from the vagina, regular painful contractions before the expected time, fever with feeling very unwell, or a clear reduction in the baby's usual movements later in pregnancy.
If the emotional impact feels unbearable, or there are thoughts of self-harm, seek immediate crisis or emergency support and tell someone trusted. Specialist pregnancy teams can also connect families with counselling and loss-support services.
Questions for fetal medicine
Ask which features confirm the diagnosis, whether the finding is anencephaly or encephalocele, what other structures have been assessed and whether more imaging could add useful detail. Request an explanation of likely outcomes, all available care choices, delivery considerations and support for future pregnancy planning.

Questions people ask
Are anencephaly and encephalocele the same condition?
No. Both affect early neural development, but their anatomy, expected effects and care considerations differ.
Can an ultrasound tell them apart?
Detailed ultrasound can often show the relevant skull and brain anatomy. The specialist may recommend further assessment if important details remain uncertain.
Does one affected pregnancy mean the same condition will happen again?
A previous neural tube defect can change planning for a future pregnancy, but it does not make recurrence certain. Preconception advice can address folic acid, medicines and individual risk factors.
