What should you know about androgen deprivation prostate cancer?

The testes make most of the body's testosterone. Androgen deprivation therapy, often shortened to ADT, can reduce this production with scheduled injections or implants. Surgical removal of the hormone-producing part of the testes is another method. Some care plans add a medicine that blocks remaining androgen activity. These options differ in how they are given and whether their hormone-lowering effect can wear off after treatment stops.

ADT may be paired with radiotherapy, used for prostate cancer that has reached other parts of the body, or started when cancer activity returns after earlier care. It may shrink or stabilise cancer and relieve cancer-related symptoms, but it is not described as a cure on its own. The team chooses timing according to disease features, symptoms, and broader health needs.

Before treatment, discuss heart and metabolic health, previous fractures, medicines, mood, memory concerns, and plans for fertility or sexual wellbeing. Ask how appointments are scheduled so an injection or implant is not missed. Follow-up can include symptom review, examination, blood testing, and checks relevant to bones, blood sugar, cholesterol, and cardiovascular health.

Regular movement can help address reduced muscle mass, fatigue, and bone loss. A tailored plan may combine strength, balance, and weight-bearing activity after a clinician assesses what is suitable. Hot flushes, reduced libido, erection difficulties, body-composition changes, and low mood are worth raising directly; each can affect quality of life and may have supportive options.

Emergency assessment is needed for new weakness or numbness in both legs, numbness near the genitals or buttocks, or loss of bowel or bladder control. These can signal pressure around the spinal cord. Seek urgent help as well for chest pain, sudden severe breathlessness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Notify the oncology team promptly about new persistent bone pain, marked mood deterioration, a fall with possible injury, or difficulty passing urine that is getting worse.

Ask why ADT is recommended at this point, whether it will be used alone or alongside another treatment, and what would lead to a change in the plan. Clarify how long hormone suppression is intended, how recovery may differ after stopping, and what support is available for bone health, exercise, sexual concerns, hot flushes, and emotional wellbeing.
