Androgens such as testosterone can stimulate many prostate cancers. Treatment can lower the body's androgen levels, block the androgen receptor, or combine both approaches. The term may therefore refer to injections, tablets, surgery to stop testicular hormone production, or a planned combination. The exact approach depends on the cancer's extent, previous care, symptoms, and the other treatments being considered.

Blockade may accompany radiotherapy, be used when cancer has spread, or be introduced when the cancer shows signs of activity after earlier treatment. It can control cancer without removing every cancer cell, so follow-up remains necessary. A treatment plan may change if monitoring suggests the disease is no longer responding adequately.

New leg weakness, numbness around the buttocks or genitals, or loss of bladder or bowel control requires emergency assessment because pressure on the spinal cord must be excluded.
