Anastrozole and precocious puberty: what families should know

It lowers estrogen production by blocking an enzyme called aromatase. It is not a routine choice for every child with early pubertal changes, and the reason for using it should be clear before treatment begins.

Precocious puberty has different causes and patterns. Anastrozole affects estrogen formation, so a pediatric endocrinologist may consider it when estrogen exposure is contributing to rapid bone maturation or other pubertal changes. Other forms of early puberty may need a different medicine or observation instead.

Assessment commonly looks at growth, pubertal development, hormone results and bone maturation. A Female Hormone Blood Panel may form part of the evaluation, but the relevant tests depend on the child's sex, symptoms and suspected cause.

Give anastrozole exactly as prescribed and do not change or stop it without the treating specialist's advice. Keep follow-up visits so the team can review height, growth speed, pubertal progression, bone health and any laboratory results they have requested.

Tell the clinician about every medicine and supplement the child uses. Record new headaches, mood changes, joint discomfort, unusual tiredness, skin changes or changes in pubertal symptoms, including when they began and whether they persist.

Contact the prescribing team promptly for severe or persistent side effects, rapid progression of pubertal changes, or symptoms that interfere with normal activity. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, a severe sudden headache, new weakness, or a widespread blistering rash.

Ask which type of precocious puberty is suspected, what treatment goal anastrozole is meant to address, how progress will be measured, which adverse effects should trigger a call, and what alternatives fit the child's diagnosis. Also clarify the follow-up schedule and who to contact between appointments.
