What anastrozole is used for

It may be prescribed after treatment for early breast cancer to lower the chance of the cancer returning, or for breast cancer that has spread or cannot be removed with surgery. The individual treatment plan depends on tumour features, menopausal status, prior therapy, and overall health.

Some breast cancer cells carry hormone receptors and can use oestrogen as a growth signal. Anastrozole blocks aromatase, an enzyme involved in making oestrogen in tissues after menopause. Lowering that signal can slow or suppress hormone-sensitive cancer cells.

It is not chemotherapy and does not treat every breast cancer. The oncology team uses pathology findings, including hormone-receptor results, to decide whether this type of endocrine treatment fits the cancer. Its role may also differ from that of medicines that block the hormone receptor directly.

Follow the dose and schedule on your prescription, and tell the oncology team about every medicine, supplement, and hormone-containing product you use. Mention pregnancy possibility, breastfeeding, liver problems, bone health concerns, or previous fractures before treatment because these details can affect planning and monitoring.

Joint stiffness, muscle or bone discomfort, hot flushes, tiredness, mood changes, vaginal dryness, and headache can occur. Record when symptoms begin and how they affect movement, rest, or daily tasks; this gives the care team useful detail when discussing symptom relief or a treatment adjustment.

Seek emergency care for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, collapse, or swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat. A blistering or rapidly spreading rash also requires urgent assessment.

Tell the treatment team promptly about yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe persistent headache, sudden weakness, or pain that sharply limits mobility. For less urgent effects that continue or worsen, contact the team rather than changing or discontinuing anastrozole on your own.

Consider asking what the hormone-receptor findings show, where anastrozole fits in your treatment sequence, and how your symptoms and bone health will be monitored. Clarify the plan for a forgotten tablet, which products could interact, and the specific symptoms that warrant an urgent call.
