Anastrozole generic name: what it means

A pharmacy label may show anastrozole prominently and may also name a manufacturer or brand. Different packaging does not by itself mean the active medicine has changed.

The generic name identifies the active ingredient. A brand name identifies a particular marketed product containing that ingredient. Tablet colour, shape, coating, inactive ingredients, or packaging can vary between manufacturers, so use the printed medicine name and strength to identify what was supplied.

Anastrozole belongs to the aromatase inhibitor group. These medicines reduce oestrogen production, which can help control cancers that use oestrogen to grow. Other medicines in the same group are not automatically interchangeable with anastrozole.

Compare the label with your prescription and confirm that it says anastrozole, shows the expected strength, and carries your directions. If the appearance has changed, a pharmacist can verify the manufacturer and active ingredient before you take it.

Take it according to the prescribed schedule. Do not substitute another aromatase inhibitor, share tablets, double a missed dose, or stop treatment because the pack looks unfamiliar without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist.
