Anaplastic seminoma: understanding the term

The term was used for seminomas with cells that appeared to divide more actively under the microscope. It does not by itself determine the outlook or treatment plan.

Seminoma is a germ cell cancer that most often starts in a testicle. Pathologists now focus on confirming the tumour type and identifying any non-seminoma component, because mixed germ cell tumours can be managed differently. The care team combines the pathology with blood tumour markers and scans to establish the disease stage. A testicular lump, swelling, heaviness or ache can be a presentation of testicular cancer, while some people have few symptoms.

A urologist usually evaluates a suspicious testicular mass with an examination, ultrasound and tumour-marker blood tests. When cancer is suspected, removal of the affected testicle through an incision in the groin commonly provides both the diagnosis and initial treatment. Further care depends on the final pathology, marker results and scan findings. Options can include close surveillance, chemotherapy or radiotherapy in selected seminoma settings. Book a prompt assessment for a new testicular lump, enlargement, firmness, persistent ache or a feeling of heaviness. Sudden severe testicular pain is an emergency because twisting of the testicle can interrupt its blood supply, whether or not cancer is suspected.
