Amoebiasis treatment during pregnancy

Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicines. A clinician can confirm the cause, judge whether infection is confined to the bowel or has become invasive, and select medicines appropriate to the stage of pregnancy and severity of illness.

Amoebiasis is an intestinal infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It can present with diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, or stools containing blood or mucus; some infections cause few symptoms. Stool testing helps distinguish it from other infections and from harmless amoebae that can look similar under a microscope.

Treatment may involve a medicine that acts on invasive organisms followed by one that clears organisms remaining inside the bowel. The exact prescription depends on symptoms, test results, pregnancy stage, allergies, and whether vomiting limits oral treatment.

Contact your maternity or primary-care clinician promptly and mention pregnancy when arranging care. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Sip oral rehydration solution frequently if diarrhoea or vomiting makes larger drinks difficult; this replaces both fluid and salts.

Continue foods you tolerate, wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food, and avoid preparing meals for others while unwell. Keep note of stool frequency, blood, vomiting, fever, urine output, and fetal movement when you normally monitor it.

Seek urgent medical care for blood in the stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever with marked weakness, fainting, confusion, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of dehydration such as a very dry mouth and dizziness.

Contact maternity services urgently for vaginal bleeding, painful contractions, fluid leaking from the vagina, or reduced fetal movement compared with your baby's usual pattern. These pregnancy warning signs require assessment regardless of the suspected bowel infection.

Ask which test will confirm Entamoeba histolytica, whether a repeat stool test is needed, which medicine targets each phase of infection, and how to take it if nausea is troublesome. Also ask what hydration plan suits you and which changes in fetal movement or pregnancy symptoms should prompt direct contact with maternity services.
