Amoebiasis treatment for adults

Treatment differs for a person carrying Entamoeba histolytica without symptoms, someone with bowel inflammation, and someone with infection involving the liver. This is why stool testing, symptom review and sometimes imaging are more useful than choosing medicine from symptoms alone.

Medicine used for invasive disease acts on organisms in affected tissue. A separate medicine may then be prescribed to remove organisms remaining within the bowel and reduce continued carriage. Taking only part of a planned course can leave an important treatment goal unfinished.

The exact choice depends on symptoms, test results, pregnancy status, liver and kidney health, allergies and other medicines. Antibiotics should not be borrowed or selected without assessment because other infections can resemble amoebiasis and require different care.

Take every prescribed medicine at the stated times and finish the planned course unless the prescriber changes it. Ask what to do after a missed dose and which foods, drinks or medicines may interact. Report rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, severe vomiting or other concerning effects promptly.

Replace fluid losses with oral rehydration solution mixed as directed, eat as tolerated and use safe water. Handwashing after toileting and before preparing food helps protect others. Do not use bowel-slowing medicine for bloody diarrhoea unless the treating clinician approves it.

Get urgent medical help for worsening or severe abdominal pain, bloody stools, persistent vomiting, fainting, confusion, reduced urination or inability to drink. Fever with pain beneath the right ribs can indicate liver involvement and needs prompt assessment. Symptoms that worsen during treatment should be reviewed rather than covered with extra non-prescription medicine.

Call emergency services for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, collapse or difficulty waking. These features can signal a severe medicine reaction or advanced dehydration and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether the infection is limited to the bowel, what each medicine is intended to do, and whether a second stage will be required. Confirm possible interactions, follow-up plans and what improvement should look like. Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding, alcohol use, liver or kidney problems, allergies, anticoagulants, supplements and any recent antibiotic treatment.
