Symptoms of amoebiasis

When Entamoeba histolytica invades the intestinal lining, the illness can resemble other causes of dysentery. Symptoms and travel history can raise suspicion, but they cannot confirm which organism is responsible.

Intestinal symptoms can include loose or frequent bowel movements, lower abdominal discomfort, cramping, urgency, fatigue and reduced appetite. Blood or mucus suggests inflammation of the bowel and warrants medical review. Fluid loss may cause thirst, dry mouth, dizziness and less frequent urination.

Amoebiasis can occasionally spread through the bloodstream to the liver. Fever, marked illness and pain or tenderness in the upper right abdomen are possible presentations. This can occur even when current bowel symptoms are mild or absent.

Note when the problem began, stool appearance, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and how often you urinate. Tell the clinician about travel, untreated water, food hygiene concerns, sexual contact that may involve faecal exposure, and whether household members are ill. Stool testing may be needed to identify the cause.

While seeking advice, drink correctly prepared oral rehydration solution and use safe water. Avoid making food for others, wash hands thoroughly with soap and do not share leftover antibiotics. Medicine that slows bowel movement should not be used for bloody diarrhoea without clinical guidance.

Seek urgent care for bloody bowel movements, severe abdominal pain, fever with right-sided upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or rapidly worsening weakness. Signs of significant dehydration include fainting, confusion, minimal urine, a very dry mouth and inability to retain fluids.

Use emergency services if someone collapses, is hard to wake or appears severely dehydrated. Earlier assessment is sensible for pregnancy, reduced immunity, significant chronic illness, young children and older adults because fluid loss may be harder to tolerate.

Ask which stool tests can separate amoebiasis from other infections, whether more than one sample is useful, and how results will affect treatment. Discuss any upper abdominal pain, medicines recently taken and health conditions that alter hydration or immunity. Also ask which changes should trigger a return visit and whether people you live with need advice.
