Suspected amoebiasis should be assessed by a clinician because diarrhoea has many possible causes and the correct treatment depends on what is found. Confirmed disease commonly needs prescription medicine, sometimes using one medicine for invasive infection and another to clear organisms remaining inside the bowel.

Oral rehydration solution helps replace the water and salts lost through loose stools. Small, frequent sips may be easier to tolerate than a large drink. Plain meals can be resumed according to appetite; prolonged fasting does not remove the parasite and may leave you weaker.

Herbal mixtures, cleansing products and concentrated essential oils have not been shown here to eradicate Entamoeba histolytica. They may irritate the gut, interact with medicine or make it harder to judge whether symptoms are worsening.

Use packaged oral rehydration solution and follow its mixing directions without making it stronger or weaker. Choose water from a safe source, eat foods that have been cooked and handled hygienically, rest, and monitor urination and alertness. Careful handwashing with soap protects household members.

Contact a clinic for advice about testing and treatment. Avoid sharing prescription medicine, taking old antibiotics or using an anti-diarrhoeal drug when stools are bloody unless a clinician specifically advises it. Tell the clinician about supplements and traditional preparations as well as regular medicines.

Obtain urgent care if diarrhoea contains blood, abdominal pain is severe, vomiting prevents drinking, urine becomes scant, or dizziness, fainting, confusion or unusual drowsiness develops. Fever with pain under the right ribs needs prompt assessment because infection outside the intestine is possible.

Seek earlier help for a young child, an older person, someone who is pregnant, or anyone with reduced immunity or significant ongoing illness. Emergency services are appropriate for collapse, difficulty waking or other signs of severe dehydration.

Ask what tests can confirm the cause, which fluids are suitable for you, and when normal eating can resume. Bring the names or containers of any herbs or supplements you have used so interactions can be checked. You can also ask how long prescribed medicines should be taken, which side effects need attention and how you will know the infection has cleared.
