What is amniocentesis?

Short answer

Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic procedure that uses a thin needle to collect amniotic fluid for laboratory testing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Type of test
A prenatal diagnostic procedure that obtains amniotic fluid for a specified laboratory analysis.
Guidance
Ultrasound lets the clinician monitor the fetus, placenta, fluid, and needle path.
Scope
The result addresses the conditions included in the ordered analysis, not every possible health concern.

The short answer

A clinician watches with ultrasound while passing the needle through the abdomen and into the fluid around the fetus. The sample may be used for chromosome, genetic, or other selected analyses.

What happens during amniocentesis

Before sampling, ultrasound helps assess the fetus, placenta, and a suitable pocket of fluid. The abdomen is cleaned, the needle path is monitored on the ultrasound image, and a small fluid sample is withdrawn. The team then checks the pregnancy according to local practice.

The procedure provides diagnostic material rather than a general check of every aspect of fetal health. Its value and limitations depend on which laboratory test is requested and why it was offered.

How to prepare and recover

Bring relevant screening, ultrasound, and family genetic information if the clinic does not already have it. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, blood-group details, bleeding problems, and any pain, bleeding, fever, or fluid loss before the appointment.

Read the consent information and ask what will be tested, how results will arrive, and what activity guidance applies afterward. Mild temporary discomfort can occur, but use the unit's contact instructions if symptoms concern you.

Warning signs following the test

Seek prompt advice from your maternity team for leaking vaginal fluid, bleeding, fever or chills, increasing abdominal pain, ongoing cramps, contractions, or feeling notably unwell. If you regularly feel fetal movement, report a clear reduction.

Severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or significant breathing trouble requires urgent medical attention. Use the emergency route advised where you live rather than waiting for a routine callback.

Questions before giving consent

Consider asking why amniocentesis is being offered now, what the laboratory will analyse, and what an uncertain or unexpected finding could mean. Clarify procedure risks in your circumstances, alternatives, result timing, and the direct number for concerns after leaving.

Questions people ask

Is amniocentesis a blood test?

No. The sample is amniotic fluid collected through the abdomen with a needle while ultrasound guides the procedure.

Is amniocentesis diagnostic or screening?

It is a diagnostic procedure for the conditions assessed by the ordered laboratory test. Screening instead estimates whether certain conditions may be more or less likely.

Will amniocentesis show every fetal condition?

No. Findings are limited to what the selected analysis can detect, and other aspects of fetal anatomy and growth are assessed through antenatal care such as ultrasound.
