Amniocentesis procedure steps: what to expect

The clinical team first checks the pregnancy by ultrasound, cleans the abdomen and selects a safe path. A thin needle then passes through the abdominal wall into the fluid around the baby. After collecting the sample, the needle is removed and the baby's heartbeat is checked again.

You usually lie on an examination couch with part of your abdomen uncovered. Ultrasound remains on the skin so the clinician can see the baby, placenta and fluid pocket while positioning the needle. You may feel pressure, a sharp sensation or cramping, but experiences vary. Staying still and following breathing or positioning instructions helps the clinician complete the sampling safely.

Arrange a quieter remainder of the day and follow the clinic's instructions about exercise, travel and sexual activity. Mild cramping or a small amount of spotting can occur. Keep the clinic's contact details nearby, note any change in symptoms and confirm how results will be communicated. If you take blood-thinning medicine or have a blood-group consideration, follow the specific plan given by your maternity team.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for fluid leaking from the vagina, bleeding that is more than light spotting, worsening or persistent abdominal pain, fever, chills, contractions or feeling markedly unwell. Follow urgent-care advice if you notice a concerning change in the baby's movements at a stage when you normally feel them. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal a complication after the procedure.

Ask which conditions the laboratory will test for, whether any medicine needs adjusting, what sensations to expect and who performs the procedure. It is also useful to clarify activity restrictions, the route for urgent contact, when each type of result may arrive and whether genetic counselling is available before or after testing.
