How amniocentesis is performed

Ultrasound is used throughout needle placement so the clinician can see the baby, placenta, and pockets of fluid. The sample contains fetal cells and substances that a laboratory can examine for the tests agreed during consent.

The team first checks the pregnancy with ultrasound and identifies a suitable entry point. Your abdomen is cleaned with antiseptic, and a sterile field is maintained. Local anaesthetic may be discussed, although practice varies because the sampling needle passes through a small area.

You may feel pressure, stinging, or cramp-like discomfort as the needle enters and fluid is drawn. The needle is then removed, and ultrasound may be used to check the baby again. If your blood group requires an anti-D injection after an invasive procedure, the team will arrange it.

Follow the clinic's instructions about bladder fullness, eating, regular medicines, and arrival time. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen, bring relevant pregnancy records, and tell the team about allergies, blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, or recent infection.

After sampling, make sure you know whom to call with concerns and when results are expected. Many people prefer to arrange transport and avoid demanding plans for the rest of the day. Use only pain relief that your maternity clinician has said is suitable in pregnancy.

Get prompt maternity advice for vaginal bleeding, loss of clear fluid, fever, chills, persistent or worsening abdominal pain, or regular contractions. If you already feel a usual pattern of fetal movement, report a marked change. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or feeling seriously unwell warrants urgent assessment.

Ask who will perform the sampling, what testing is planned, whether your placenta's position changes the route, and what discomfort management is available. Confirm the recovery advice, contact number, result pathway, and whether your blood group means you need treatment after the procedure.
