What type of genetic testing is amniocentesis?

Short answer

Amniocentesis is an invasive prenatal diagnostic procedure that provides fetal cells for targeted chromosome or genetic laboratory testing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Category
Invasive prenatal diagnostic sampling.
Material tested
Fetal cells and other components obtained from amniotic fluid.
Test scope
The requested laboratory analysis determines which conditions can be assessed.

A prenatal diagnostic procedure

It is the sampling method, not a single universal laboratory test. A clinician withdraws a small amount of amniotic fluid under ultrasound guidance, and the laboratory performs the analysis selected for the clinical question.

Diagnosis versus screening

Prenatal screening estimates the chance of selected conditions and does not establish a diagnosis. Diagnostic analysis of an amniotic-fluid sample looks directly at fetal genetic material for the specified condition or chromosome change, producing a more definitive answer for what was tested.

The test menu can include a rapid analysis for selected chromosome differences, a full chromosome assessment, a chromosomal microarray or a test aimed at a particular gene. Not every patient needs every analysis, and broader testing can identify findings whose meaning is uncertain.

Choosing the right analysis

Before agreeing, ask the fetal medicine or genetics team to name each proposed laboratory analysis and the conditions it can and cannot detect. Explain any known genetic diagnosis in either biological parent, a previous affected pregnancy or relevant family history, because targeted testing may require advance laboratory planning.

Consider how you would use a confirmed, negative or uncertain result. Genetic counselling can help interpret the limits of the analysis, possible implications for relatives and whether parental samples might be requested to clarify a finding.

Medical help after sampling

Contact your maternity unit urgently after amniocentesis if amniotic fluid may be leaking, you develop vaginal bleeding, fever, chills, intensifying abdominal pain, contractions or a marked sense of being unwell. If fetal movements are already established, seek assessment for a clear decrease from the baby's normal pattern. Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Questions about the laboratory tests

Find out whether results arrive in stages, how uncertain or incidental findings are handled, and who will discuss them with you. Ask whether the sample could need additional analysis, whether another family member's sample is relevant and how the result may alter pregnancy or newborn care.

Questions people ask

Is amniocentesis the same as NIPT?

No. NIPT is a maternal blood screening test that estimates the chance of selected chromosome conditions. Amniocentesis supplies fetal cells for diagnostic laboratory analysis.

Does a normal amniocentesis result rule out all genetic conditions?

No. A normal finding applies to the changes covered by the chosen analysis. It cannot exclude genetic conditions outside that scope or every cause of a fetal difference.

Why might a clinician request a microarray?

A chromosomal microarray can look for smaller missing or extra segments of genetic material than a conventional chromosome view. Its suitability depends on the clinical findings and counselling about possible uncertain results.
