How is amniocentesis used for DNA testing?

Short answer
Amniocentesis collects amniotic fluid containing fetal cells, allowing a laboratory to analyse DNA for selected chromosome or gene changes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How amniocentesis provides DNA
It is a diagnostic sampling procedure rather than a single DNA test. The information returned depends on which laboratory analysis is ordered and the clinical reason for requesting it.
What DNA analysis can show
The laboratory may examine chromosome number, look for missing or extra pieces of chromosomes, or search for a specific gene change associated with a condition in the family. Some tests are broad, while targeted tests answer one defined question.
A normal result applies only to the changes that the chosen method can detect. It does not confirm every aspect of fetal health, and it may not explain an ultrasound difference. Occasionally a finding has uncertain meaning or reveals information the family did not expect, so consent should cover these possibilities.
Choosing the right analysis
Before sampling, discuss the screening result, ultrasound finding, medical history, and family history with the obstetric and genetics teams. If a familial gene change is suspected, bring any relative's laboratory report; the exact variant can help the laboratory choose a focused test.
Clarify which analyses will be performed, whether parental blood samples are needed, how long different components may take, and what choices each possible result could raise. NIPT uses cell-free DNA from maternal blood as a screening test, whereas amniocentesis obtains fetal cells for diagnostic analysis.
Urgent symptoms after sampling
Call the maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, fever, chills, regular cramping, or abdominal pain that becomes strong or does not improve. Once fetal movement is routinely felt, a noticeable reduction or change also warrants assessment.
Severe pain, heavy bleeding, collapse, or feeling acutely unwell requires emergency help. Do not wait for a DNA result before reporting physical symptoms after the procedure.
Questions to take to your appointment
Ask what the proposed DNA test is called, what changes it detects, what it may miss, and whether an uncertain or incidental finding is possible. Other useful points are who will explain the report, whether stored cells could support further analysis, and how the result may change monitoring, birth planning, or newborn care.

Questions people ask
Is amniocentesis the same as NIPT?
No. NIPT screens cell-free DNA in the pregnant person's blood. Amniocentesis directly samples fluid containing fetal cells and can support diagnostic testing for selected conditions.
Can one amniocentesis DNA test find every genetic condition?
No. Each method detects particular kinds of genetic change. The clinical team chooses an analysis based on the question, and the report should describe its scope and limitations.
Why might parents be asked for blood samples?
Comparing a fetal finding with parental DNA can help clarify whether a change was inherited and, in some situations, help the laboratory interpret what it may mean.
