When and where is amniocentesis done?

The exact timing depends on why testing is offered, the stage of pregnancy, and which laboratory analysis is needed. A fetal medicine or obstetric team normally performs the procedure in a setting equipped for ultrasound and pregnancy monitoring.

An ultrasound first checks the baby's position, the placenta, and a suitable pocket of amniotic fluid. The abdomen is cleaned, then a fine needle passes through the abdominal wall into the fluid while the clinician watches its position on ultrasound. A small sample is withdrawn and sent to a laboratory.

The visit may take longer than the needle procedure because the team needs time for scanning, preparation, consent, and an assessment afterward. Cramping or soreness can occur for a short time once the test is finished.

Before the appointment, confirm whether you should arrive with a full bladder, as instructions can vary with pregnancy stage and clinic practice. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, blood-group information, twins or a higher-order pregnancy, and any blood-borne infection. Arrange a quieter day afterward and follow the unit's guidance on work, exercise, travel, and pain relief.

Make sure you know how results will be delivered and whether rapid and more detailed analyses return separately. A negative result answers only the conditions included in the requested laboratory tests.

Contact your maternity unit urgently after amniocentesis if you develop vaginal bleeding, clear fluid leaking from the vagina, a high temperature or chills, contractions, or abdominal pain that is severe or does not settle. Also seek prompt assessment for reduced or changed fetal movement once you are at a stage when movements are usually felt.

If symptoms are intense, you feel faint or very unwell, or you cannot reach your maternity team, use local emergency services.
