Is amniocentesis a blood test?

Amniocentesis is not a blood test; it collects amniotic fluid, although maternal blood may also be taken. Under ultrasound guidance, a clinician passes a fine needle through the abdomen and withdraws fluid surrounding the baby. Fetal cells in that fluid provide material for the diagnostic analysis selected for your pregnancy.

A maternal blood sample can help the laboratory distinguish the pregnant person's DNA from fetal DNA in the amniotic-fluid sample. Blood may also be used for checks connected with procedure planning, including confirming blood group information. Its purpose should be stated on the request or consent discussion, since it does not replace the fluid sample used for amniocentesis.

NIPT examines cell-free DNA in a maternal blood sample and provides a screening result for specified chromosome conditions. Amniocentesis obtains fetal cells for diagnostic testing. Ask which condition is under consideration, whether the offered test screens for it or diagnoses it, what an unclear result would lead to and whether the information could change pregnancy care.

Urgently contact maternity care for leaking vaginal fluid, bleeding, fever, chills, contractions, or abdominal pain that is severe, persistent or worsening after the procedure. These warnings relate to the invasive fluid collection, not an ordinary maternal blood draw. Use the clinic's emergency contact details rather than waiting for laboratory results.

Request the name of every planned blood and amniotic-fluid analysis, the question each one answers and how the results will be combined. Confirm whether your blood is needed to check for maternal DNA in the sample or for another reason. Ask who will contact you, which findings are definitive and which may require further testing.
