Amniocentesis during pregnancy

The maternity team may offer amniocentesis after a screening result, ultrasound finding or family history raises a question that diagnostic testing could answer. The fluid contains fetal cells that can be examined for selected chromosome or gene changes. Other components of the fluid can be analysed for a specific clinical reason. The requested laboratory test determines what information the sample can provide.

Ultrasound is used to check the pregnancy and choose a route for the needle away from the fetus. A result may confirm or exclude a tested condition, but it cannot rule out every health or developmental concern. The decision is personal because the information, procedure-related risks and possible next choices matter differently to each family.

Ask the specialist why the procedure is being suggested now, exactly what will be tested and how each possible result may affect care. Mention medicines that influence bleeding, any bleeding disorder, allergies and your blood group if known. Use the unit's own directions for meals, fluids, bladder filling, transport and activity, as arrangements depend on the pregnancy stage and clinic.

You can request time to discuss alternatives such as NIPT or chorionic villus sampling, while recognising that they differ in timing, sample type and whether they screen or diagnose. Decide whether you want a companion and keep the unit's after-hours contact details available before leaving.

Brief mild cramping may occur after amniocentesis. Contact the maternity service promptly if pain persists or becomes stronger, or if you develop vaginal fluid leakage, bleeding, fever, chills, regular contractions or reduced fetal movement once movement is established. Heavy bleeding, intense abdominal pain, fainting or sudden serious illness calls for urgent assessment. Follow the procedure team's instructions even if your symptoms differ from what you expected.
