Underarm colour can deepen after shaving, friction, deodorant irritation or a rash. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when pigment remains after inflammation settles. A lactic-acid moisturiser may smooth built-up surface cells, yet it will not remove an ongoing trigger. Thick, velvety darkening can have a different cause and deserves assessment rather than repeated exfoliation.

Tender redness, cracking, itch or odour points to active inflammation such as intertrigo or contact dermatitis. Acid lotion can aggravate those symptoms, so calm the fold and establish the diagnosis before pursuing colour change.

Test a small spot on intact skin and wait to see how it reacts before treating the wider underarm. Begin cautiously, use only a thin film, and keep the product away from broken skin. Do not apply straight after shaving, waxing or laser hair removal, when the barrier is especially vulnerable.

Choose a gentle cleanser and pause scrubs, other acids and fragranced products while assessing tolerance. Reducing friction and switching a suspected irritating deodorant may matter more than adding stronger lightening products. If burning, peeling or redness develops, wash the area gently and stop use.

Seek care for swelling, blisters, drainage, marked pain, a spreading rash or signs of infection. Book an evaluation if darkening is sudden, becomes thick and velvety, appears in other folds, or continues despite removing irritants. These patterns can require diagnosis and treatment that an over-the-counter acid cannot provide.

Ask whether the change represents post-inflammatory pigment, contact dermatitis, intertrigo or another condition. Bring the names of deodorants, hair-removal products and active skincare used there. If the skin is healthy but pigment persists, discuss whether hydroquinone, a peel, laser toning or a different hair-removal approach is appropriate for your skin tone.
