What should you know about Amitabh Bachchan and hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a viral infection affecting the liver. It can be short-lived or persist, and some people have no obvious symptoms. A blood test, not comparison with a public figure, establishes whether infection is present.

The virus spreads through infected blood and certain body fluids. Relevant routes include birth from an infected mother, unprotected sexual contact, shared injecting equipment, and instruments that are not properly sterilised. It does not spread through ordinary social contact such as sharing a meal.

When symptoms occur, hepatitis B may present with fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, discomfort on the upper right side of the abdomen, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the eyes and skin. Chronic infection may remain quiet while liver injury develops.

Arrange clinical advice if you may have been exposed, live with someone who has hepatitis B, are pregnant, or have unexplained liver test changes. Testing can distinguish current infection, past infection and vaccine-related immunity; the exact panel needs clinical interpretation.

If infection is confirmed, follow-up may include liver function tests, markers of viral activity and assessment of liver health. Not everyone needs antiviral medicine immediately, but continued monitoring matters. Household and sexual contacts can ask about testing and vaccination, and personal items that may carry blood, such as razors or toothbrushes, should not be shared.

Obtain urgent medical care for new confusion, unusual drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, a swollen abdomen, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. These can signal significant liver dysfunction or bleeding and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask which hepatitis B markers were tested, whether the pattern indicates current infection or immunity, whether liver assessment is needed, how often monitoring should occur, and whether close contacts need testing or vaccination.
