Amgevita for Crohn’s disease

It is a biologic treatment given by injection under the skin. By blocking a signalling protein involved in inflammation, it may control bowel symptoms and help maintain improvement. It does not cure Crohn’s disease, and response varies between people.

A gastroenterology team may consider adalimumab when Crohn’s inflammation is active or other treatment has not provided enough control. Abdominal pain and diarrhoea are common presentations of active Crohn’s disease, but symptoms alone cannot show how much inflammation is present. Clinical review, blood tests and sometimes stool tests, imaging or endoscopy help guide decisions.

Because Amgevita changes immune activity, screening is required before treatment. The team checks for infections and reviews vaccines, previous illnesses, other medicines, pregnancy plans and any history that could alter treatment safety.

Follow the injection schedule supplied by your specialist and learn the injection technique from a trained professional. Rotate injection sites, store the medicine exactly as instructed, inspect the device before use and place used sharps in an approved container. If a dose is missed, follow your care team’s instructions rather than doubling the next dose.

Tell clinicians and pharmacists that you use adalimumab before starting another medicine or receiving a vaccine. Keep planned blood tests and appointments even when bowel symptoms settle. Contact the prescribing team before pausing treatment, including around an infection or operation.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever, persistent cough, shortness of breath, painful urination, spreading redness, unusual bruising or feeling markedly unwell, as these may indicate infection or another treatment problem. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or a rapidly developing widespread rash after an injection.

Urgent assessment is also needed for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, heavy rectal bleeding, black stools or signs of dehydration. These red flags can occur with serious bowel complications and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask what improvement to look for, how inflammation will be monitored, what to do if an injection is late, and who to contact if infection symptoms develop. Check which vaccines are suitable, how travel affects storage and dosing, and whether planned surgery, dental treatment or pregnancy requires coordination.
