A trained practitioner places a very fine probe into each hair follicle and delivers electrical energy to damage the follicle's growth centre. Each follicle is treated individually, so the process is different from laser hair removal and may require repeated visits as hairs enter active growth.

The word “American” may describe a provider's branding, training approach or equipment rather than a distinct clinical category. Ask for the exact method, device and practitioner credentials instead of relying on the label. Electrolysis can be used on many hair and skin colours because it targets one follicle directly rather than targeting pigment in the hair shaft.

Treatment can cause brief stinging, redness, tenderness or small crusts around treated follicles. Poor technique or unsuitable aftercare can increase the chance of infection, pigment change or scarring.

Arrange a consultation before treatment. Explain any tendency to form raised scars, active skin infection, medicines that affect healing and previous reactions to cosmetic procedures. Confirm that the probe is sterile and single use, reusable parts are disinfected appropriately, and the practitioner can explain the settings chosen for your skin and hair.

Avoid plucking or waxing the target hairs before an appointment because the practitioner needs to see and enter the follicles. Follow the provider's instructions about trimming, sun exposure, cosmetics and soothing products. Afterward, keep the area clean, avoid picking crusts and protect exposed skin from sunlight.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, swelling or redness is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop pus, spreading warmth, blisters, an open wound or a new persistent colour change. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness or rapidly spreading hives after any product or procedure.

Ask who will perform the procedure, which electrolysis method and epilator will be used, how sterility is maintained, what sensation and skin reaction to expect, and how the plan changes if irritation or pigment change occurs.
