The examiner attaches a clean, appropriately sized ear tip and gently positions the outer ear to improve the view. Light and magnification reveal the canal and eardrum. The clinician compares the appearance with the history, pain location, hearing change, fever, discharge, recent swimming, and any injury.

A limited view is common when wax, swelling, discharge, movement, or a narrow canal blocks the line of sight. This does not confirm an infection. The examiner may need to clear material safely, reassess later, or use additional hearing or middle-ear tests.

Tell the clinician about ear surgery, ventilation tubes, a possible foreign object, sudden hearing loss, discharge, dizziness, and anything placed in the ear. Keep the head steady during the brief examination. For a child, a caregiver may be shown a secure, comforting hold that prevents sudden movement.

Do not insert cotton buds, tools, drops, or home camera attachments into a painful ear unless a clinician has confirmed they are suitable. Attempting to remove a deep object or compacted wax can push it farther inward or injure the canal and eardrum.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness with neurological symptoms, significant bleeding after an injury, facial weakness, or swelling and redness spreading behind the ear. A button battery or sharp object in the ear requires immediate professional removal.

Arrange a timely appointment for persistent ear pain, discharge, worsening fever, reduced hearing, or symptoms that return after treatment. Very young children may show ear illness through poor feeding, unusual irritability, disturbed sleep, or reduced responsiveness to sound rather than describing pain.

Ask whether the full eardrum was visible, whether the problem is in the canal or behind the eardrum, and what finding supports the proposed treatment. Clarify whether wax removal, hearing assessment, follow-up otoscopy, or referral is needed, and which new symptoms should bring you back sooner.
