Short answer

Recurring indigestion may come from reflux, stomach irritation, medicines, or meal habits, and persistent or changing symptoms should be assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Helpful record
Write down meal timing, medicines, symptom location, and what reliably makes discomfort better or worse.
Medicine caution
Some painkillers irritate the stomach; review them rather than stopping prescribed treatment unaided.
Urgent warning
Blood in vomit, black sticky stools, or chest-pressure symptoms need urgent care.

A clear answer

Indigestion can include upper-abdominal discomfort, burning, early fullness, bloating, belching, or nausea. Symptoms after large or fatty meals may behave differently from discomfort related to medicine use or inflammation, so the context is more informative than any single sensation.

Possible explanations

Acid reflux often presents with burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the mouth, or symptoms that worsen after eating or lying down. Gastritis and peptic ulcer can present with upper-abdominal discomfort or nausea, and Helicobacter pylori infection may underlie some cases. Gallstones more characteristically cause stronger upper-abdominal pain, sometimes after rich food, rather than simple bloating alone.

Anti-inflammatory painkillers and certain other medicines can irritate the stomach. Alcohol, smoking, large meals, and eating close to bedtime may aggravate symptoms. Because heart problems can sometimes feel like indigestion, pressure or tightness with exertion, sweating, breathlessness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw needs urgent attention.

Ways to reduce symptoms

Record meals, drinks, medicines, timing, and the exact location of discomfort. Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and reduce triggers that repeatedly reproduce symptoms. Avoid stopping a prescribed medicine without advice; instead, ask whether its timing, dose, or an alternative should be considered.

A pharmacist can advise on short-term symptom relief and check for interactions or reasons a product may not suit you. Frequent reliance on remedies should lead to a clinical review, since treatment varies depending on whether reflux, ulcer disease, infection, gallbladder trouble, or another problem is suspected.

When not to wait

Arrange medical care for recurring symptoms, trouble or pain when swallowing, persistent vomiting, reduced appetite, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, a new abdominal lump, or symptoms that have clearly changed. Black sticky stools or vomit containing blood or material resembling coffee grounds require urgent assessment.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe or rapidly worsening upper-abdominal pain, fainting, marked breathlessness, clammy sweating, or pain spreading beyond the chest or upper abdomen. Do not drive yourself when symptoms suggest a medical emergency.

Preparing for an assessment

Bring a list of prescribed medicines, painkillers, supplements, and remedies. Ask whether testing for Helicobacter pylori, blood tests, imaging, or a camera examination is appropriate, how any acid-reducing treatment should be taken, and which warning signs should change your follow-up plan.

Questions people ask

Is recurring indigestion the same as acid reflux?

Not necessarily. Reflux is one cause and commonly presents with heartburn or sour-tasting fluid, while indigestion also covers upper-abdominal discomfort, early fullness, bloating, and nausea from several possible causes.

Can painkillers contribute to indigestion?

Yes. Anti-inflammatory painkillers can irritate the stomach and contribute to ulcers in some people. Discuss safer use or alternatives with a clinician or pharmacist rather than stopping prescribed therapy on your own.

When can indigestion be an emergency?

Emergency help is needed when apparent indigestion occurs with chest pressure, sweating, fainting, marked breathlessness, spreading pain, severe abdominal pain, or signs of gastrointestinal bleeding.
