Why do I keep getting hiccups?

Short answer
Repeated hiccups come from involuntary diaphragm spasms and deserve assessment when they persist or disrupt eating, sleeping, or breathing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Mechanism
- A diaphragm spasm followed by vocal-cord closure produces the hiccup sound.
- Common triggers
- Fast eating, a large meal, fizzy drinks, and alcohol can provoke an episode.
- Useful record
- Note meals, medicines, heartburn, episode length, and sleep disruption.
The short answer
Brief episodes often follow stomach stretching or irritation. Recurrent episodes are easier to assess if you record their timing, meal pattern, medicines, alcohol intake, heartburn, nausea, cough, and any neurological symptoms.
Why hiccups can recur
Hiccups begin when the diaphragm contracts suddenly and the vocal cords close. Eating quickly, overeating, fizzy drinks, alcohol, abrupt temperature changes, laughter, or excitement can trigger a short episode. Acid reflux can present with hiccups as well as burning, sour fluid in the mouth, belching, or symptoms after lying down.
Persistent hiccups sometimes arise from medicine effects or irritation affecting the nerves and brain pathways that coordinate breathing. The symptom pattern, recent procedures or illness, and a complete medication list help a clinician decide whether further examination or testing is needed.
Ways to settle an episode
Pause eating, sit upright, and take slow, controlled breaths. Small sips of cool water may help. Avoid rapid swallowing, very large meals, fizzy drinks, and any personal trigger you have noticed. Do not use methods that risk choking, injury, or prolonged breath-holding.
If heartburn accompanies the hiccups, choose smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and discuss suitable reflux treatment with a pharmacist or clinician. Do not stop a prescribed medicine abruptly; ask whether its timing or an alternative should be considered.
When hiccups need a check
Contact a clinician when hiccups last beyond a couple of days, keep returning without a clear trigger, prevent sleep, make it hard to eat or drink, or begin after a new medicine or procedure. Earlier review is appropriate if dehydration, repeated vomiting, weight loss, or significant abdominal pain develops.
Seek emergency care if hiccups occur with severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing blood, sudden weakness, facial droop, trouble speaking, confusion, a seizure, or a sudden severe headache. These accompanying features, rather than the hiccups alone, determine the urgency.
Preparing for an appointment
Bring the start date, episode pattern, known triggers, related digestive symptoms, and names of medicines or supplements. Ask whether reflux or a medicine could explain the episodes, whether an examination or tests are indicated, and what treatment is suitable if sleep or nutrition is affected.

Questions people ask
Can acid reflux cause frequent hiccups?
Acid reflux can present with recurrent hiccups, particularly when heartburn, sour-tasting fluid, belching, or symptoms after lying down occur at the same time.
Is holding my breath a good hiccup remedy?
Gentle, brief breath control may interrupt an episode for some people, but prolonged breath-holding is unsafe. Stop immediately if you feel dizzy, distressed, or short of breath.
Could a medicine be causing my hiccups?
Some medicines can contribute to persistent hiccups. Record when symptoms began and ask the prescriber to review the medicine rather than stopping it yourself.
