Why Do I Always Have Dark Circles Under My Eyes?

Short answer
Persistent dark circles often reflect natural pigmentation, visible blood vessels, facial structure, irritation, or several of these factors together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Pigment, thin skin, visible vessels, puffiness, irritation, and tear trough shadows
- Helpful first step
- Avoid rubbing and use gentle skincare plus sun protection
- Urgent warning signs
- Sudden one-sided swelling, pain, fever, injury, or a change in vision
The short answer
They can remain visible even when you sleep well. Their colour and depth may also change with lighting, dehydration, nasal congestion, skin inflammation, or rubbing around the eyes.
What persistent shadows may mean
Brown-toned circles can come from pigment in the skin, while blue or purple tones may reflect vessels showing through thin eyelid skin. A groove between the lower lid and cheek can cast a shadow; this structural feature is known as a tear trough hollow. More than one feature can be present at once.
Atopic dermatitis can present with itchy, inflamed skin around the eyes, and repeated rubbing can deepen discolouration. Congestion may make vessels beneath the eyes more noticeable. Dark circles alone do not identify a specific condition, so the surrounding skin changes and the pattern over time matter.
Practical ways to care for the area
Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser, avoid rubbing, and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen around the orbital bone without getting it into the eyes. A cool compress may temporarily reduce puffiness. If itching or scaling is present, seek advice before applying active skincare because eyelid skin is easily irritated.
A clinician can distinguish pigment, visible vessels, puffiness, and hollows during an examination. Treatment should match the main contributor. Under-eye filler may soften a true hollow in a suitable patient, but it does not treat every type of darkness and requires assessment of anatomy, skin quality, and possible adverse effects.
When to arrange medical care
Arrange a routine assessment if the circles are new, steadily changing, accompanied by persistent rash or itching, or troubling enough that you want treatment. Seek prompt care for sudden one-sided darkening with swelling, significant pain, redness, fever, an eye injury, double vision, reduced vision, or difficulty moving the eye.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether pigment, vessels, puffiness, skin inflammation, or a tear trough is creating most of the appearance. You can also ask which products are safe near your eyes, whether an underlying rash needs treatment, what improvement is realistic, and which side effects matter for any proposed procedure.

Questions people ask
Can dark circles remain even when I get enough sleep?
Yes. Sleep can affect how tired the area looks, but inherited pigmentation, thin skin, visible vessels, puffiness, and facial structure may persist independently of sleep.
Will an eye cream remove persistent dark circles?
A suitable product may help dryness or some surface pigmentation, but no single cream corrects every cause. Irritating ingredients can worsen eyelid inflammation, so introduce products cautiously.
Is filler appropriate for all under-eye darkness?
No. Filler targets selected hollows rather than pigment, dermatitis, or every form of puffiness. A qualified clinician should assess the area before recommending it.
