Always burping and farting: what to know

Short answer
Frequent burping and farting commonly come from swallowed air and food digestion, though associated symptoms may need evaluation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Burping
- Usually releases swallowed air from the upper digestive tract
- Farting
- Releases gas from digestion or swallowed air through the bowel
- Helpful record
- Foods, timing, bowel pattern, pain, bloating, and heartburn
The short answer
Burping mainly releases air swallowed into the stomach, while farting releases gas produced or trapped farther along the bowel. Eating rapidly, fizzy drinks, gum, smoking, and certain fermentable foods can increase one or both. The pattern matters more than the mere presence of gas.
Clues from other symptoms
Burping with burning behind the breastbone, sour regurgitation, or symptoms after lying down can accompany acid reflux or a hiatus hernia. Upper abdominal pain, nausea, or reduced appetite may occur with gastritis or a peptic ulcer. Farting with bloating or bowel changes may instead reflect food intolerance, constipation, or altered digestion.
Gas does not by itself establish any of these conditions. Note whether symptoms follow particular foods, begin after a medicine change, improve after opening the bowels, or wake you from sleep. This context helps a clinician decide whether examination or testing is needed.
Ways to reduce symptoms
Slow down at meals, chew with your mouth closed, and limit straws, gum, and fizzy beverages. Gentle movement can help trapped intestinal gas pass. If one food seems linked, reduce it temporarily and keep the rest of your diet stable so the result is interpretable.
A diary should include meal contents, timing, bowel movements, bloating, pain, and heartburn. Avoid repeatedly suppressing normal gas or adopting a highly restrictive diet. If dairy, wheat, pulses, or another group seems involved, a clinician or dietitian can guide a structured trial while protecting nutrition.
When medical advice is needed
Book an appointment when the change persists, steadily worsens, interferes with daily life, or occurs with unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, persistent diarrhoea or constipation, blood in the stool, loss of appetite, or continuing abdominal pain.
Get urgent help for intense or sudden abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with inability to pass stool or gas, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, or heavy chest pressure. Urgency comes from these warning signs, not from how much gas you pass.
What to discuss at an appointment
Describe which symptom comes first, its relationship to food and bowel movements, and any heartburn, pain, stool change, or nausea. Ask whether your medicines can increase gas, whether a targeted food trial is suitable, and which warning signs should change your care plan.

Questions people ask
Is passing gas after meals normal?
Some gas is a normal part of swallowing and digestion. A new, persistent change with pain, weight loss, bleeding, or altered bowel habits warrants assessment.
Can heartburn occur with frequent burping?
Yes. Acid reflux often presents with heartburn and may also include burping or sour regurgitation, particularly after meals or when lying down.
Do gas symptoms require acid-reflux medicine?
Not necessarily. Acid-reducing treatment targets reflux-related symptoms and may not help intestinal gas, so the symptom pattern should guide treatment.
