Short answer

For mild altitude sickness, stop ascending, rest, drink to thirst, avoid alcohol, and descend if improvement does not follow.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First rule
Do not ascend with symptoms
Safe monitoring
Check breathing, balance, speech, and alertness
Planning
Keep descent available

Useful home measures

Home care is suitable only while symptoms remain mild, the person is alert and walking normally, and a safe route down is available if the condition changes.

Why these measures help

Altitude sickness follows exposure to reduced oxygen before the body has acclimatised. Rest lowers exertion while remaining at the same height prevents further exposure from ascent. Descent is more decisive because oxygen availability increases at lower elevation.

Headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, poor appetite, and disturbed sleep may occur in mild illness. A symptom checklist helps companions notice a change, but neither a warm drink nor a good night's sleep rules out deterioration.

Care at a hotel, camp, or home

Keep activity gentle, stay warm, eat easy-to-tolerate food, and take ordinary fluids according to thirst. Avoid alcohol, recreational drugs, and unprescribed sleep aids because they may impair breathing, coordination, or awareness. Do not leave the unwell traveller alone.

Check that speech is clear, walking is steady, breathing is comfortable at rest, and fluids stay down. Agree on the descent route and transport before darkness or worsening weather limits options. Delay all further ascent until every symptom has gone.

If using a non-prescription pain medicine, read the label and ask a pharmacist about kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcers, blood thinners, pregnancy, allergies, and duplicate ingredients in cold or headache products.

Signs to descend and seek help

Urgent descent and emergency care are needed for confusion, unusual drowsiness, staggering, inability to walk straight, breathlessness at rest, chest congestion, blue or grey lips, or coughing frothy fluid. Arrange assistance; impaired people must not descend by themselves.

Move lower and obtain medical advice if mild symptoms worsen, repeated vomiting prevents drinking, rest brings no improvement, or the group cannot monitor the person safely. Temporary oxygen may support an evacuation but does not replace descent when descent is possible.

Prepare before the next trip

Ask a clinician to review your planned sleeping altitudes, pace of travel, previous episodes, medical conditions, and regular medicines. Clarify which pain reliever is suitable and whether prescribed prevention should be considered.

Also ask how to recognise neurological or breathing emergencies, where the nearest lower ground lies, and what communication or evacuation arrangements the destination offers.

Questions people ask

Does drinking lots of water cure altitude sickness?

No. Normal hydration supports wellbeing, but forcing excess water does not correct reduced oxygen exposure. Drink to thirst and use descent when symptoms fail to improve.

Can I sleep off mild altitude sickness?

Rest can help during a pause in ascent, but someone should monitor you. Do not simply go to sleep if breathing, balance, alertness, or vomiting is worsening.

Is alcohol safe while acclimatising?

Avoid it when symptoms are present. Alcohol can worsen dehydration, disturb sleep, and make judgement or neurological changes harder to recognise.
