The device does not diagnose a condition by itself. A trained professional interprets the breathing measurements alongside your symptoms, medical history, examination and the quality of each attempt.

You usually breathe in fully, seal your lips around a clean mouthpiece and blow out as hard and as completely as instructed. The spirometer records air volume and flow. Several acceptable attempts help the operator check that the pattern can be reproduced rather than relying on a single uneven breath.

Results may help identify an obstructive or restrictive breathing pattern, monitor change over time, or compare measurements before and after an inhaled medicine. Effort, coughing, an incomplete seal, pain and misunderstanding the instructions can alter the tracing.

Follow the testing service's instructions about inhalers because whether to continue or temporarily withhold one depends on the purpose of the appointment. Bring your inhalers and medicine list, wear clothing that does not restrict your chest or abdomen, and mention a recent respiratory infection, chest procedure, heart problem or pregnancy before testing.

Listen for the operator's timing cues and keep exhaling until told to stop. If you become dizzy, develop pain or cannot continue comfortably, remove the mouthpiece and alert the operator; the test can be paused while you recover.

Do not wait for a routine spirometry appointment if you have severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, crushing chest pain or rapidly worsening breathlessness. Seek emergency medical help.

Tell the operator immediately if testing triggers chest pain, pronounced breathlessness, faintness or coughing up blood. These warning symptoms require assessment rather than another forced breathing attempt.

Ask whether the attempts met quality standards, what pattern the tracing shows, how your measurements compare with the expected range for someone with your characteristics, and whether inhaler use changed the result. Clarify whether repeat spirometry, another lung test or a treatment review is the next step.
