Alpha arbutin and photosensitivity

Daily sun protection still matters because ultraviolet exposure can deepen uneven pigmentation and work against the reason many people use alpha arbutin.

True photosensitivity is an unusual skin response triggered or worsened by light. Irritation from a skincare product can instead cause stinging, tightness, redness or peeling, leaving the skin barrier less comfortable in heat and sun. These experiences may feel similar, but they do not have the same cause.

A reaction may also come from another ingredient in the formula or from combining several active products, rather than from alpha arbutin itself.

Apply a small amount to intact skin and introduce it gradually. Avoid layering it immediately with products that already make your skin sting or peel. A plain moisturiser can support the skin barrier, while broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade and protective clothing help limit ultraviolet exposure.

If burning, persistent redness or scaling develops, stop the product and simplify your routine until the skin settles. Check the full ingredient list before trying the formula again.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the reaction is severe, keeps returning, spreads beyond the application area or appears mainly after light exposure. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, blistering, widespread hives, trouble breathing, eye involvement or sores affecting the mouth.

Bring the product packaging and a list of other skincare products and medicines, since these details can help distinguish irritation, allergy and a light-triggered reaction.

Ask whether the pattern looks like irritation, contact allergy or photosensitivity; whether another product or medicine could contribute; and when it would be reasonable to restart pigment care.
