Short answer

Alpecin may cleanse oil from the scalp, but it does not identify or treat every cause of excess oiliness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can Alpecin help an oily scalp?

Alpecin is a brand with several formulations, so the ingredient list and directions on the exact bottle matter. Shampoo removes sebum, sweat, styling residue, and loose scale from the surface. It cannot permanently reduce normal sebaceous gland activity, and a tingling or cooling sensation is not proof that an underlying scalp condition is being treated.

Why oiliness may come with flakes or itch

Sebum is a normal scalp oil that spreads along hair shafts. Fine or straight hair may show grease quickly because oil travels readily and weighs strands down. Heavy styling products, incomplete rinsing, sweating, and touching the hair can add to the appearance. Dandruff commonly presents with scalp flakes and itch, while seborrheic dermatitis often presents with greasy scale and inflamed skin around oil-rich areas. Neither condition can be confirmed by oiliness alone.

Harsh or repeated washing may also irritate the scalp, producing tightness, burning, or flaking that can be mistaken for dirt. The useful question is therefore not only how oily the hair looks, but whether redness, scale, soreness, or hair loss is present.

How to wash an oily scalp

Choose a shampoo that your scalp tolerates and follow its label. Apply it mainly to the scalp, massage gently with fingertips rather than nails, and rinse thoroughly. Conditioner can be placed on the mid-lengths and ends if it makes roots feel heavy. Adjust washing frequency to visible oil, sweat, and comfort instead of forcing a fixed schedule. Stop the product if it repeatedly causes burning, a rash, or worsening itch.

Persistent greasy scale may need medicated shampoo treatment with an active ingredient selected for the suspected condition. A pharmacist or clinician can explain how to alternate it with a gentle cleanser and whether it needs contact time before rinsing.

When to arrange an examination

Get medical advice if oiliness is accompanied by persistent redness, thick scale, open sores, pus, pain, unpleasant odour, or noticeable hair loss. Prompt assessment is warranted for spreading swelling, fever, or a tender boggy patch. Also seek help when careful washing and an appropriate anti-dandruff product do not control symptoms, because psoriasis, contact dermatitis, fungal infection, and other disorders can resemble an oily flaky scalp.

Questions about your scalp routine

Bring the bottle or a photograph of its ingredient list. Ask whether the scalp looks inflamed, whether the flakes fit dandruff or another diagnosis, and which active shampoo is appropriate. Clarify how often to use it, how long it should stay on the scalp, which signs indicate irritation, and whether hair products or headwear could be contributing.

Questions people ask

Does washing oily hair make the scalp produce more oil?

Washing removes surface sebum. Choose frequency according to buildup and tolerance; overly harsh cleansing can irritate the skin.

Can an oily scalp still be sensitive?

Yes. Oil production and skin sensitivity are separate features, so a greasy scalp can still sting or react to fragrance and cleansing agents.

Should conditioner be avoided completely?

Not necessarily. Applying a suitable conditioner away from the scalp can reduce tangling without adding much weight at the roots.
