Alopecia and scalp micropigmentation: what to know

The procedure places tiny deposits of pigment in the upper scalp to imitate shaved follicles or reduce the colour contrast between hair and skin. The visual result depends on the pattern of loss, hairstyle, pigment match and the practitioner's technique.

For a closely shaved scalp, pigment dots can create the impression of short hair stubble. With longer thinning hair, shading can make exposed scalp less noticeable. It cannot add hair shafts, restore follicle function or prevent alopecia from progressing. If the hair-loss pattern later changes, the design may need adjustment so its outline still looks natural.

Pigment can gradually soften or change appearance with sun exposure, skin characteristics and time. Colour selection and a conservative hairline matter because a very dark pigment or rigid edge may look less natural as surrounding hair changes.

First confirm the type and stability of hair loss with a dermatologist, especially when shedding is new or the scalp is inflamed. Tell the practitioner about allergies, keloid tendency, bleeding problems, medicines that affect clotting and previous scalp procedures. Ask to see healed results on skin tones and hair-loss patterns similar to yours, not only photographs taken immediately after treatment.

After treatment, follow the clinic's instructions on washing, sweating, sun protection and avoiding scratching while the skin settles. Do not place pigment over an active rash, infection, open wound or unexplained lesion. Hair transplantation and micropigmentation serve different goals, so discuss sequencing if both are being considered.

Arrange prompt assessment if treated skin develops worsening pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, blistering or facial swelling. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or rapidly increasing swelling after exposure to pigment or aftercare products.

A dermatologist should also examine sudden hair loss, smooth expanding patches, marked scaling, broken hairs, scalp tenderness or scarring before camouflage is performed. These features can guide diagnosis and treatment even when micropigmentation remains a later cosmetic option.

Ask what type of alopecia you have, whether it is currently active, and whether medical treatment should come before camouflage. You can also ask how future thinning could affect the proposed hairline, whether your skin history changes the risk of pigment reactions, and how micropigmentation would fit with a possible hair transplant.
