Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. The product label matters because cleansers, leave-on serums, and other formulations can differ in strength and directions. Start cautiously, especially if your skin is sensitive or you already use retinoids, exfoliating acids, or acne treatments.

Mandelic acid loosens bonds between older surface cells, allowing them to shed more evenly. This can make rough texture feel smoother and help prevent dead skin from adding to pore blockage. Gradual exfoliation may also make discolouration left after a blemish look more even over time.

A brief mild tingle can occur, but burning is a sign to rinse the product off rather than push through. Irritation may show as tightness, persistent redness, scaling, tenderness, or a flare of eczema. More frequent application does not necessarily produce a better result and may damage the skin barrier.
