Allergy pills for itchy skin: when they may help

A tablet may reduce symptoms without removing the cause. The visible pattern, timing and exposures help distinguish hives from eczema, contact reactions, infection, psoriasis or scabies.

Hives characteristically present with itchy, raised welts that shift or disappear and return. Atopic dermatitis can present with recurrent dry, inflamed patches, while contact dermatitis appears where the skin encountered an irritant or allergen. Scabies can cause intense itch, often involving close contacts as well.

Flaking, cracking, rings, burrows, oozing and the body sites involved provide useful clues. Itching all over without visible skin changes may have a cause beyond the skin and warrants an assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Choose an antihistamine only after checking the active ingredient, warnings and interactions with a pharmacist or clinician. Avoid taking overlapping allergy, cough or sleep products. If the medicine makes you drowsy, do not drive, use machinery or drink alcohol.

Apply an unperfumed moisturiser regularly, keep showers brief and lukewarm, wear loose breathable clothing and use a cool compress. Stop new fragranced skin products until the cause is clearer. Scratching can break the barrier and invite infection, so keep nails short and cover weeping areas with a clean non-stick dressing.

Emergency help is needed for breathing trouble, throat tightness, collapse, or sudden lip, tongue or facial swelling. Take these symptoms seriously regardless of whether a rash is visible.

Arrange prompt care for fever, spreading redness, warmth, pus, painful skin, blisters, peeling, involvement of the eyes or mouth, or a rash following a newly started medicine. Book a routine review when itching persists, wakes you repeatedly, affects most of the body or recurs without a clear trigger.

Ask what diagnosis fits the distribution and appearance, whether a cream or targeted treatment is preferable, and how you will judge whether the tablet is helping. Tell the clinician about new medicines, travel, affected household members and workplace exposures.
