Allergy medicine for vertigo

These medicines suppress signals from the balance system rather than correcting the underlying problem. A clinician or pharmacist can check whether a short course is suitable and whether another treatment should take priority.

Vertigo is a sensation of movement or spinning, not a diagnosis. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo typically causes brief episodes triggered by head movement and is usually treated with a repositioning manoeuvre rather than allergy medicine. Migraine, Meniere's disease, and middle-ear problems can require different plans.

Balance-suppressing antihistamines may be useful during an intense short-lived episode, particularly when nausea is prominent. Continued use can make drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, or difficulty passing urine more troublesome, and suppression of balance signals may slow the brain's adaptation.

Before taking an allergy medicine for dizziness, confirm the active ingredient and intended dose with a pharmacist or clinician. Do not drive, climb, swim alone, or operate machinery if you feel dizzy or drowsy. Avoid alcohol and check before combining the medicine with sleeping tablets, strong pain medicines, or other sedating products.

Sit or lie down when an attack starts, rise slowly, and reduce fall hazards nearby. Keep a note of triggers, episode length, hearing changes, headache, and medicines taken; this pattern helps a clinician distinguish positional vertigo from other causes.

Seek emergency care for new vertigo with facial droop, arm or leg weakness, trouble speaking, double vision, inability to walk, collapse, a sudden severe headache, chest pain, or persistent vomiting that prevents fluids staying down. Sudden hearing loss with vertigo also needs prompt assessment.

Book a medical review when episodes recur, the cause is unknown, symptoms follow a head injury, or dizziness persists beyond the short period advised for the medicine. Older adults and people with glaucoma, urinary retention, or a high risk of falls should check suitability before using a sedating antihistamine.

Ask what is most likely causing the vertigo, how long the medicine should be used, and which side effects mean it should be stopped. If turning in bed or looking up triggers brief spinning, ask whether an examination for positional vertigo and a repositioning manoeuvre would be more appropriate.
