Allergy medicine for a face rash

Contact dermatitis, eczema, infection, heat rash, psoriasis and reactions to medicine can overlap in appearance. Because facial and eyelid skin is delicate, avoid choosing a strong cream or combining allergy tablets without professional advice.

A rash after a new cosmetic, hair dye, fragrance or sunscreen may fit contact dermatitis. Raised welts that shift location are more consistent with hives. Scaly rings, sharply bordered plaques, tiny sweat-related bumps or crusting suggest other causes that an antihistamine will not clear.

A drug eruption can begin after starting medicine and may spread beyond the face. The prescriber needs the exact medicine name, when it was started and whether there are mouth sores, fever or other body symptoms.

Pause newly introduced non-essential facial products and wash gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser. Use a plain moisturiser that has previously been tolerated, keep the skin cool and avoid scrubs, acids, retinoids, essential oils and heavy makeup until irritation settles.

A pharmacist or clinician can decide whether an oral antihistamine fits the pattern and check other medicines. Do not apply a borrowed steroid, antibiotic or antifungal cream: the wrong product can mask infection, aggravate some rashes or harm thin eyelid skin.

Call emergency services for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, faintness or a fast-progressing reaction affecting several body areas. Facial swelling with these airway or circulation symptoms is not suitable for home observation.

Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, vision change, marked eyelid swelling, blistering, skin peeling, mouth sores, fever, purple spots, severe tenderness or a rash that follows a new medicine. A painful one-sided rash near the eye also needs prompt examination.

Bring photographs, packaging for recent skin or hair products and a complete medicine list. Ask which diagnosis matches the borders and texture, whether any product needs formal avoidance, what is safe near the eyes and how long to follow the treatment before reassessment.
