Allergy medication during pregnancy

The word “allergy medicine” covers tablets, eye drops, nasal sprays and combination cold remedies. Each exposes the body differently, and combination products may add a decongestant, pain reliever or cough ingredient that is not needed for an isolated allergy symptom.

A clinician weighs symptom severity against medicine exposure and may favour a treatment applied to the affected area, such as saline, an eye preparation or a nasal spray. The appropriate choice can also change with the stage of pregnancy and with conditions such as high blood pressure.

Show the full package or ingredient list to your obstetric clinician, GP or pharmacist. Include prescription medicines, supplements and anything bought without a prescription. Do not assume that a herbal or natural product is suitable in pregnancy, and do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing the change.

Limit triggers where practical: keep windows closed during dusty or high-pollen conditions, wash exposed skin after outdoor activity, and reduce contact with a known pet or dust trigger. Saline nasal spray can moisturise the nose without an antihistamine ingredient.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, confusion, or a rapidly spreading reaction. Contact your maternity or medical team promptly if vomiting prevents fluids staying down, symptoms are severe, or you notice concerning pregnancy symptoms alongside the allergy complaint.

Confirm which symptom needs treatment, whether a non-medicine measure is reasonable, what active ingredient and formulation are preferred, how often to use it, and whether your trimester, blood pressure or other prescriptions alter the plan.
