Allergy-induced laryngitis: symptoms, relief and warning signs

Reducing allergen exposure, drinking fluids and resting the voice may ease irritation. Treatment should address the allergy rather than relying on repeated whispering or forceful throat clearing, which can strain the vocal folds.

Allergic inflammation in the nose can produce mucus that drains down the throat. This postnasal drip, repeated coughing and throat clearing can irritate the larynx. Direct exposure to airborne triggers may add dryness or irritation.

A clinician may consider other explanations because viral infections and acid reflux can produce similar voice changes. Clues such as sneezing, itchy eyes, a blocked or runny nose, trigger exposure and the pattern of symptoms help distinguish the cause.

Sip water regularly, avoid smoke and strongly scented sprays, and limit shouting, singing or long conversations while the voice is strained. Speak gently at a comfortable pitch instead of whispering. A saline nasal rinse may help clear allergens and mucus when prepared and used according to its instructions.

If symptoms follow dust, pollen, pets or another recognisable trigger, reducing that exposure may help. A pharmacist or doctor can check whether an allergy medicine is suitable, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition. Some products can dry the throat or cause drowsiness.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, rapidly increasing swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, faintness, or trouble swallowing saliva. These signs can occur during a severe allergic reaction and need immediate assessment.

Arrange a medical review if hoarseness persists, keeps returning, is getting worse, or occurs with a neck lump, coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, significant pain or loss of voice. A GP can examine likely triggers and decide whether the vocal folds need further assessment.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, reflux, infection or voice overuse; whether your current medicines could worsen dryness; and which allergy treatment is appropriate for you. Mention when the hoarseness began, known exposures, nasal or eye symptoms, reflux symptoms and any effect on swallowing or breathing.
