Allergy and swollen lips: what you should know

A reaction may also cause itching, hives, facial swelling, or tingling in the mouth. Lip swelling by itself does not identify the cause, so consider its timing, possible exposures, and whether it is spreading.

Allergic swelling can begin after a food, medicine, insect sting, or contact with a product used on or near the lips. A deeper form of swelling called angioedema commonly affects the lips and may occur with or without hives.

Not every swollen lip is an allergy. Irritation from cosmetics or dental products, an injury, infection, and some medicines can produce a similar appearance. A clinician will usually ask how quickly it began, what else was happening, and whether previous episodes followed the same pattern.

Stop using a newly applied lip, skin, or dental product and gently rinse away any residue. A cool compress may ease discomfort; avoid rubbing, squeezing, or testing the suspected product again. Take a photo and write down recent foods, medicines, supplements, stings, and products, including when each was used.

If symptoms are mild and stable, a pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine is suitable for you. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own, but contact the prescriber promptly if swelling began after taking it. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector and an emergency allergy plan, follow that plan and seek emergency help.

Get emergency help immediately if lip swelling comes with trouble breathing, wheezing, a tight or swollen throat, tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, a hoarse voice, faintness, confusion, or rapidly spreading swelling. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or your breathing is affected.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a first unexplained episode, swelling that is worsening or not settling, fever, increasing pain, pus, or repeated attacks. Recurrent episodes without an obvious trigger may need assessment for causes other than a straightforward allergy.

Ask whether the pattern fits an allergic reaction, contact irritation, infection, medicine-related swelling, or angioedema. Useful follow-up questions include whether any suspected medicine needs an alternative, whether allergy testing would answer a specific question, and what written action plan to follow if swelling returns.
