Seeing an allergist for food intolerance

Short answer
An allergist can help separate food intolerance from immune-mediated food allergy, although digestive assessment or dietetic support may also be more appropriate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main distinction
- Intolerance is not the same immune process as food allergy
- Helpful preparation
- A detailed food, timing and symptom record
- Testing principle
- Choose tests that match the clinical history
What an allergist can clarify
Food intolerance usually involves difficulty digesting or responding to a food component rather than an allergic immune reaction. It often presents with bloating, abdominal discomfort, gas or diarrhoea after eating. Food allergy can present with hives, swelling, throat symptoms, wheezing, vomiting or collapse, sometimes soon after a small exposure.
An allergist is particularly useful when the history includes rapid reactions, skin or breathing symptoms, or uncertainty about whether emergency medication is required. Symptoms limited to the digestive tract may also need review by a general practitioner, gastroenterologist or dietitian, depending on their pattern and severity.
Preparing for an assessment
Keep a food and symptom record showing what was eaten, the amount, preparation, timing, symptoms and any medicine taken. Bring ingredient labels and photographs of visible reactions when available. Continue eating normally unless a food has caused a serious immediate reaction or a clinician has advised avoidance.
Testing should follow the clinical history. Allergy skin or blood tests do not diagnose most intolerances, and broad commercial panels can lead to unnecessary restriction. Depending on the suspected mechanism, care may involve a structured removal and reintroduction plan, a specific diagnostic test, or nutrition counselling to protect dietary variety and nutrient intake.
When symptoms need faster care
Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion or collapse after eating. If prescribed emergency adrenaline for a known allergy, use it immediately according to your action plan.
Seek prompt medical review for blood in the stool, persistent vomiting, dehydration, severe abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss or symptoms that repeatedly wake you. These features are not explained by a simple intolerance without further assessment.
Questions that shape the plan
Ask whether your symptom timing suggests allergy, intolerance or another digestive condition; which test would change management; and whether a supervised food challenge is relevant. Discuss how long any elimination should last, how foods will be reintroduced, and whether a dietitian should check nutritional adequacy.

Questions people ask
Can an allergy blood test confirm food intolerance?
Most food intolerances are not identified by allergy blood tests. The appropriate evaluation depends on the suspected food component, symptom pattern and other possible digestive causes.
Should I remove several foods before the appointment?
Avoid broad restriction unless clinically advised. It can obscure the pattern and reduce nutritional variety; record meals and reactions instead, except for a food linked to a serious immediate reaction.
