What should you know about allergies tension headache?

Short answer
Allergies can cause congestion and facial pressure that feel like a headache, while a tension-type headache is a separate pattern often linked with pressure or tightness around the head and neck.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Sneezing, nasal congestion or itchy eyes
- Tension-type pattern
- Pressing or tightening head pain with possible neck tension
How the patterns differ
Allergic symptoms commonly include a blocked or runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes. Head pain may accompany congestion, but facial pressure alone does not establish the cause. A tension-type headache more often feels like a steady pressing or tightening sensation on both sides of the head, sometimes extending into the scalp, neck or shoulders.
Poor sleep, stress, prolonged screen use, jaw clenching or neck muscle strain may contribute to tension-type headache. A headache occurring with allergy symptoms can therefore have more than one contributor, and the timing, location and associated symptoms help a clinician sort out the pattern.
What you can try
Rest in a quiet room, drink fluids, take screen breaks and gently relax the jaw, neck and shoulders. Keep a brief record of headache timing, allergy symptoms, possible triggers and any medicine used. Follow package directions and check with a pharmacist if you have another condition or take regular medicines.
If headaches recur, interfere with work or sleep, or do not settle with sensible self-care, arrange a GP Consultation. Managing nasal allergy symptoms may help when congestion is part of the pattern, but repeated headache should not automatically be attributed to allergy.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, fever with a stiff neck, vision loss, or a headache after a significant head injury. Arrange prompt assessment for a new or changing headache, repeated vomiting, or symptoms that steadily worsen.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit tension-type headache, allergy-related congestion or another cause; whether a review of medicines is needed; and which warning signs should prompt urgent care for you.
