Allergies and a sore throat

Allergic throat irritation is often scratchy and accompanied by sneezing, nasal itching, clear discharge, or watery eyes. It may fluctuate with exposure rather than beginning as an isolated intense throat pain.

Mucus draining down the back of the throat can prompt repeated clearing and coughing. A blocked nose also encourages mouth breathing, which dries the throat during sleep or in air-conditioned rooms.

A common cold, COVID-19, influenza, tonsillitis, and strep throat can present with throat pain. Infection becomes more concerning when soreness is abrupt or severe, fever is present, neck glands are tender, swallowing is difficult, or there is no familiar allergy pattern. Acid reflux may cause morning soreness, hoarseness, or a sour taste without nasal itching.

Sip fluids regularly, avoid smoke and vaping, and use a sterile saline rinse if postnasal drainage is troublesome. Warm or cool drinks may feel soothing; choose the temperature that is comfortable and avoid anything that worsens reflux.

Treating the nasal allergy may reduce ongoing throat irritation. Ask a pharmacist about a suitable antihistamine or nasal spray and how to use it. Check lozenges and combination cold products carefully so you do not duplicate ingredients or take a medicine that conflicts with your health conditions.

Arrange an examination if pain is severe, keeps recurring, is mainly on one side, comes with fever or swollen neck glands, or does not settle as expected. Testing may be considered when the clinical pattern suggests a specific infection.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, rapidly increasing neck or tongue swelling, severe dehydration, confusion, or a rash with marked illness. These signs go beyond ordinary allergy-related irritation.

Ask whether the throat appearance and symptom timing favour allergy, infection, or reflux; whether a swab or other test would change treatment; and which nasal or throat medicines are suitable with your current prescriptions and medical history.
