Allergic reaction to gnat bites: care and warning signs

Wash the area, cool it, and resist scratching. A pharmacist can help select itch relief, but rapidly worsening symptoms, infection signs, or a reaction beyond the bite area should receive medical attention.

Saliva introduced during a bite can trigger redness, itching, a firm bump, and swelling around the site. A strong local reaction may enlarge over time without causing breathing or circulation problems. Scratching can break the surface and allow bacterial infection.

Hives away from the bites, swelling of the lips or tongue, wheeze, vomiting with other allergy signs, dizziness, or collapse suggest a systemic reaction. Multiple itchy marks do not by themselves show allergy severity; the symptoms beyond the skin determine urgency.

Clean the skin with soap and water, then use a cool compress. Keep nails short and cover a scratched site with a clean dressing if needed. Avoid squeezing the bumps, applying heat, or using strongly fragranced remedies on inflamed skin.

A pharmacist may suggest an oral antihistamine or a suitable topical corticosteroid according to age, health conditions, pregnancy status, bite location, and other medicines. Check before treating a young child or skin near the eyes. Prevent further bites with covering clothing, window screens, and a locally appropriate insect repellent used according to its label.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or face. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector and an allergy action plan, use it as directed rather than waiting for an antihistamine to work.

Arrange prompt assessment when swelling is severe or continues to expand, the bite is near the eye or inside the mouth, or fever, pus, red streaking, increasing pain, or spreading warmth develops. Mention travel, outdoor location, and any illness accompanying the bites.
