Rash after contact with dogs: allergy and other causes

Move away from the exposure, wash touched skin gently, change contaminated clothing, and avoid scratching. A repeated pattern deserves clinical assessment because pollen, saliva, grooming products, fleas, fungi, or another unrelated skin condition can also be responsible.

Dog allergy involves proteins found in dander, saliva, and urine rather than fur itself. Hives are raised itchy welts that can change position. Direct licking may irritate exposed skin, while people with atopic dermatitis may notice an itchy flare after close contact.

A ring-shaped scaly patch, burrows, persistent crusting, or a rash affecting household members points away from a straightforward dog allergy and needs assessment. Timing matters: record where contact occurred, whether the dog licked the skin, and whether sneezing, wheeze, or eye symptoms accompanied the eruption.

Wash hands and exposed skin with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser. Change clothes, avoid touching the face, and keep the dog out of the bedroom until the cause is clearer. Washing bedding and cleaning soft furnishings may reduce material carried indoors.

Use a cool compress and plain moisturiser on intact skin. Ask a pharmacist whether an antihistamine is suitable, especially for a child, pregnancy, other medicines, or a condition that makes drowsiness risky. Do not apply veterinary products or strong steroid creams to yourself.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, wheezing with distress, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or face. Follow an existing allergy action plan and use prescribed adrenaline promptly when directed.

Seek medical advice for a spreading or painful rash, blistering, fever, pus, marked warmth, eye involvement, or symptoms that do not settle after avoiding contact. Recurrent reactions may justify allergy evaluation; a clinician can decide whether testing would change management.

Ask whether the lesions resemble hives, eczema, contact dermatitis, or infection; whether respiratory symptoms change the plan; and what exposure controls are realistic. Bring photographs and a list of grooming or household products used around the dog.
