Allergic reaction after sunburn: signs and next steps

Move out of the sun, cool the skin gently, drink fluids, and avoid the suspected product. Because these reactions overlap in appearance, severe blistering, swelling, systemic symptoms, or an unclear recurring pattern should be assessed by a clinician.

Sunburn commonly causes hot, tender redness followed later by peeling. A light-triggered rash is often very itchy and may form small bumps on sun-exposed areas. Contact dermatitis from sunscreen, fragrance, or an after-sun product can match the places where it was applied.

Some medicines make skin unusually sensitive to sunlight, producing an exaggerated burn-like reaction. Write down medicines and products used before exposure, and note whether covered skin was spared. These details help a clinician separate sun damage from allergy or photosensitivity.

Stay in shade, cover the area with loose clothing, and apply a cool damp cloth. Use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser if it does not sting. Do not break blisters or pull peeling skin, and avoid ice directly on the burn, perfumed products, exfoliants, and further ultraviolet exposure while healing.

A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether a suitable pain reliever, antihistamine, or topical corticosteroid is appropriate. Check first for children, pregnancy, other health conditions, or treatment near the eyes. Do not discontinue a prescription medicine without guidance; ask the prescriber whether it could cause photosensitivity.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or face. Prompt assessment is also warranted for extensive blistering, severe pain, confusion, marked weakness, repeated vomiting, eye involvement, or signs of dehydration.

Contact a clinician if redness and pain are worsening, pus or spreading warmth develops, the eruption follows a newly started medicine, or similar rashes return with sunlight. Avoid deliberate re-exposure to test a suspected allergy.
