Hives, also called urticaria, present as raised, itchy welts that may change shape, fade, and reappear elsewhere. Individual marks can be pale, pink, red, or close to the surrounding skin tone. Deeper swelling of the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet is called angioedema.

Possible triggers include foods, medicines, infections, heat, cold, pressure, or exercise, although no clear trigger is found in many recurring cases. Fexofenadine controls symptoms rather than removing the underlying trigger.

Follow the package directions or the dose prescribed for your age and health. Swallow it with water. Apple, orange, and grapefruit juice can reduce absorption, so avoid taking the medicine with these juices. Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium can also interfere; a pharmacist can tell you how to separate them.

Do not combine antihistamines unless a clinician has advised it. Fexofenadine is less likely to cause sleepiness than some alternatives, but dizziness or drowsiness can still occur; learn how it affects you before driving. Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not wait for Allegra to work in a suspected severe allergic reaction; use prescribed emergency medication as directed while help is coming.

Arrange a medical assessment when hives keep returning, do not improve with appropriate antihistamine use, follow a new medicine, or occur with fever, joint pain, bruising, or welts that stay fixed and painful. A clinician can check the diagnosis, review triggers and medicines, and decide whether another treatment is suitable.
