Allegra for a sore throat: when it may help

Allegra is a brand of the antihistamine fexofenadine. It can reduce sneezing, a runny nose and mucus dripping down the throat when allergies are responsible. It will not kill bacteria, shorten a viral illness or directly numb throat pain.

An itchy throat with sneezing, clear nasal discharge and symptoms after dust, pollen or animal exposure fits an allergy pattern. Fever, swollen neck glands, marked pain when swallowing, cough or body aches can point toward another cause. Acid reflux can also irritate the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down.

Fexofenadine sometimes causes headache, nausea or dizziness. Dryness may make an already irritated throat feel uncomfortable, although it is generally less sedating than some older antihistamines.

Check the active ingredient and follow the package or prescription instructions. Swallow fexofenadine with water; fruit juices can reduce its absorption, and aluminium- or magnesium-containing indigestion remedies should not be taken close to it. A pharmacist can advise on spacing and on suitability during pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney problems or use with other medicines.

Warm fluids, adequate hydration and avoiding smoke can soothe irritation. Arrange an assessment if the soreness persists, returns repeatedly or is accompanied by features that do not fit your usual allergies.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing throat or tongue swelling, blue or grey lips, faintness, or a severe allergic reaction. Prompt medical review is also appropriate for dehydration, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, a stiff neck, a spreading rash or worsening symptoms.

Ask whether your symptom pattern suggests postnasal drip, infection or reflux; whether fexofenadine interacts with your medicines; and what examination or testing is appropriate if the throat pain continues.
